Labile affect refers to abnormal emotional responsiveness characterized by rapid, dramatic, and often unpredictable changes in emotional expression. Patients with labile affect may shift quickly from laughter to tears, anger to euphoria, or other emotional states without apparent external triggers or with responses that are grossly disproportionate to the situation. This symptom can occur in various psychiatric and neurological conditions, including mood disorders, personality disorders, traumatic brain injury, and certain neurodegenerative diseases. The emotional changes are typically brief, intense, and feel uncontrollable to the patient, significantly impacting social and occupational functioning.
