Rapid cycling
A pattern in bipolar disorder characterized by four or more mood episodes within a 12-month period.
Full Definition
Rapid cycling is a course specifier in bipolar disorder defined by the occurrence of at least four mood episodes (major depressive, manic, hypomanic, or mixed) within a 12-month period. Episodes must be demarcated by partial or full remission of at least 2 months, or by a switch to an episode of opposite polarity. This pattern affects approximately 10-20% of individuals with bipolar disorder and is associated with increased disability, treatment resistance, and higher risk of suicide. Documentation should clearly identify episode boundaries and duration to support this diagnosis.
Usage
Usage note: Always hyphenate. Specify episode count and timeframe in documentation.
