coprolalia

Pronunciation: kop-roh-LAY-lee-ah

The involuntary utterance of obscene words or phrases, most commonly associated with Tourette syndrome.

Full Definition

Coprolalia is a neurological symptom characterized by the involuntary and repetitive vocalization of obscene, inappropriate, or socially unacceptable words or phrases. While popularly associated with Tourette syndrome, coprolalia actually occurs in only 10-15% of individuals with this condition. The symptom can also appear in other neurological disorders, including some forms of dementia, brain injury, or other tic disorders. The vocalizations are not under conscious control and often cause significant distress and social impairment for affected individuals. Treatment may include behavioral interventions, medications to reduce tic frequency, and psychoeducation for family members and caregivers about the involuntary nature of the symptoms.

Usage

Usage note: Emphasize involuntary nature to reduce stigma; distinguish from voluntary profanity.
