Pharmacogenomics testing involves analyzing specific genetic variations that affect how individuals metabolize and respond to psychiatric medications. These tests examine genes encoding drug-metabolizing enzymes (such as CYP2D6, CYP2C19), drug transporters, and drug targets to predict medication efficacy and adverse reaction risk. In psychiatry, this testing is increasingly used to guide antidepressant, antipsychotic, and mood stabilizer selection, potentially reducing trial-and-error prescribing and improving treatment outcomes. Results are typically categorized as poor, intermediate, normal, or ultrarapid metabolizers for specific drug classes. While promising, the clinical utility continues to evolve, and results should be integrated with clinical judgment, patient history, and other relevant factors rather than used as sole prescribing determinants.
