rapid cycling

A pattern of bipolar disorder with four or more mood episodes within a 12-month period.

Full Definition

Rapid cycling is a specifier used in bipolar disorder diagnosis to describe a pattern of frequent mood episodes, defined as having four or more major depressive, manic, hypomanic, or mixed episodes within a 12-month period. These episodes must be demarcated by either partial or full remission lasting at least two months, or by switching to an episode of opposite polarity. Rapid cycling affects approximately 10-20% of individuals with bipolar disorder and is associated with increased disability, higher suicide risk, and poorer treatment response. Women are more likely to experience rapid cycling, particularly during perimenopause.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenated. Requires careful documentation of episode timing and demarcation.
