An analytic impasse occurs when the analytic process becomes stuck, with both participants feeling frustrated and unable to move forward therapeutically. This may result from unrecognized countertransference, unanalyzed resistance, or mutual enactments that recreate pathological patterns. Impasses can also arise from mismatched analytic technique or unaddressed cultural or social factors. While distressing, impasses often contain important clinical information and can lead to breakthroughs when properly understood and worked through.
