perseveration

Pronunciation: per-sev-er-AY-shun

Repetition of words, phrases, or responses despite changed context or appropriateness.

Full Definition

A cognitive phenomenon involving the persistent repetition of words, phrases, thoughts, or behavioral responses that continue beyond their relevance or appropriateness to the current situation. Perseveration can manifest verbally (repeating words or phrases), cognitively (inability to shift mental sets), or behaviorally (continuing actions inappropriately). This symptom is commonly observed in various psychiatric and neurological conditions including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, dementia, frontal lobe dysfunction, and traumatic brain injury. Perseveration represents impaired cognitive flexibility and executive functioning, making it difficult for individuals to adapt their responses to changing circumstances.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from echolalia (repeating others' words) and stereotypy (repetitive motor behaviors).
