pseudoseizure

Non-epileptic episodes that resemble seizures but are psychological in origin rather than neurological.

Full Definition

Pseudoseizures, now more appropriately termed psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), are episodes that appear similar to epileptic seizures but do not involve abnormal electrical brain activity. These events are typically psychological in origin and may be related to conversion disorder, trauma, or other psychiatric conditions. Diagnosis requires video-EEG monitoring to demonstrate normal brain activity during episodes. Unlike epileptic seizures, PNES often have atypical features such as gradual onset, side-to-side head movements, or ability to respond during the episode. Treatment focuses on psychiatric intervention rather than antiepileptic medications.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term is now 'psychogenic non-epileptic seizures' (PNES) to reduce stigma.
