psychomotor retardation

Slowing of physical movement and mental processes observed in psychiatric conditions.

Full Definition

Psychomotor retardation involves a generalized slowing of both physical movements and cognitive processes, commonly seen in major depressive disorder, catatonia, and some psychotic conditions. Patients may exhibit slow speech, delayed responses, reduced spontaneous movement, and difficulty with concentration and decision-making. This symptom can be objectively observed and measured, making it an important clinical indicator for diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Severe psychomotor retardation may indicate the need for more intensive interventions.
