subsyndromal

Having some symptoms of a psychiatric disorder but not meeting full diagnostic criteria.

Full Definition

Subsyndromal refers to a clinical presentation where a patient exhibits some symptoms of a psychiatric disorder but does not meet the complete diagnostic criteria as defined in classification systems like DSM-5-TR or ICD-11. This may occur when symptom count, duration, or severity thresholds are not met, or when symptoms cause distress but not significant functional impairment. Subsyndromal conditions are clinically significant as they often cause considerable distress, may represent early stages of full disorders, and frequently benefit from intervention. Examples include subsyndromal depression, where patients have depressive symptoms but don't meet criteria for major depressive disorder.

Usage

Usage note: Note spelling: subsyndromal (not sub-syndromal).
