Metabolizer status refers to an individual's genetically determined capacity to metabolize medications through specific enzyme pathways, particularly cytochrome P450 enzymes. Patients are classified as poor metabolizers (slow drug clearance, higher risk of side effects), intermediate metabolizers (somewhat reduced enzyme activity), extensive metabolizers (normal enzyme activity), or ultrarapid metabolizers (enhanced enzyme activity, potentially reduced drug efficacy). This genetic variation significantly affects drug dosing, efficacy, and side effect profiles. Pharmacogenetic testing can determine metabolizer status and guide medication selection and dosing, particularly for antidepressants and antipsychotics.
