Full Definition

Second-generation antipsychotics, also called atypical antipsychotics, are a class of psychiatric medications developed to treat psychotic disorders with fewer movement-related side effects than older antipsychotics. They typically have different receptor binding profiles, often targeting serotonin receptors in addition to dopamine receptors. Examples include risperidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine. While they have reduced extrapyramidal symptoms, they may carry increased risk of metabolic side effects such as weight gain and diabetes.
