Beam modulation refers to techniques that modify the intensity of radiation across different portions of the treatment beam to create complex dose distributions. This can be achieved through various methods including multileaf collimator movement (IMRT), volumetric arc techniques (VMAT), or compensating filters. Beam modulation allows for highly conformal dose delivery while sparing nearby critical structures. The degree of modulation is often quantified by modulation complexity scores.
