Full Definition
In radiation oncology treatment planning, the clinical target volume (CTV) represents the tissue volume that contains demonstrable tumor and/or subclinical malignant disease that must be eliminated. This volume includes the gross tumor volume plus a margin for suspected microscopic extension. The CTV is determined by the radiation oncologist based on imaging studies, pathology findings, and knowledge of tumor biology and patterns of spread.
