Gamma Knife is a dedicated stereotactic radiosurgery system that uses multiple cobalt-60 sources arranged in a hemispherical array to deliver highly precise radiation doses to intracranial lesions. The system achieves sub-millimeter accuracy through rigid head frame immobilization and sophisticated treatment planning software. Each beam is individually weak, but their convergence at the target creates a high-dose region with rapid dose fall-off, enabling treatment of lesions close to critical structures. The technology is primarily used for brain metastases, acoustic neuromas, arteriovenous malformations, and functional disorders.
