volumetric modulated arc therapy

Also written as: VMAT — Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy

Advanced radiation delivery technique where the treatment machine rotates around the patient while simultaneously modulating beam intensity.

Full Definition

Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a sophisticated form of intensity-modulated radiation therapy that delivers treatment while the linear accelerator gantry rotates in an arc around the patient. During delivery, the multileaf collimator leaves move dynamically to modulate the beam intensity, and the dose rate may vary continuously. This technique allows for highly conformal dose distributions with improved efficiency compared to static-field IMRT, typically reducing treatment times while maintaining plan quality.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from standard IMRT in technical documentation.
