autograft

Tissue transplanted from one part of a patient's body to another part of the same patient.

Full Definition

An autograft involves transferring tissue from one anatomical site to another within the same individual, eliminating immunological rejection concerns. This is the gold standard for many reconstructive procedures, particularly in breast reconstruction, burn treatment, and facial reconstruction. Autografts include skin grafts, bone grafts, fat grafts, and composite tissue transfers. The term requires careful distinction from allograft and xenograft in medical documentation.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the tissue type and harvest site when documenting autograft procedures.

In Context

  • "A split-thickness skin autograft was harvested from the anterior thigh for wound coverage." — Surgical procedure note
  • "The patient consented to autograft reconstruction using tissue from the latissimus dorsi." — Informed consent documentation
