Non-invasive ultrasonic assessment of blood flow in reconstructed tissue flaps.

Full Definition

Doppler monitoring involves the use of ultrasonic devices to assess arterial and venous blood flow within reconstructed tissue flaps during the critical post-operative period. Both handheld Doppler probes and implantable Doppler devices may be used to detect changes in perfusion that could indicate vascular compromise requiring immediate intervention. This monitoring is particularly crucial in free flap reconstruction where early detection of thrombosis can enable salvage procedures and prevent total flap loss. Regular Doppler assessment is typically performed hourly during the first 48-72 hours post-operatively.
