flap monitoring

Post-operative surveillance of transferred tissue to assess viability and detect complications.

Full Definition

Flap monitoring refers to the systematic post-operative assessment of reconstructed tissue to ensure adequate blood supply and early detection of complications such as thrombosis or necrosis. Monitoring protocols typically include clinical assessment of color, temperature, capillary refill, and turgor, often supplemented by Doppler ultrasound or other adjunctive techniques. The intensity of monitoring is highest in the first 72 hours when most vascular complications occur. Proper documentation includes frequency, findings, and any interventional actions taken.

Usage

Usage note: Should specify monitoring frequency and parameters in post-operative orders.
