Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is a microsurgical procedure that creates connections between lymphatic vessels and small veins to bypass damaged or removed lymph nodes. This technique is used both prophylactically during initial cancer surgery and therapeutically for established lymphedema. The procedure requires identification of functioning lymphatic vessels using specialized imaging such as indocyanine green lymphography, followed by microsurgical anastomosis to nearby venules. LVA aims to restore lymphatic drainage and prevent or reduce chronic lymphedema, particularly in patients undergoing axillary lymph node dissection.
