vascular pedicle

The blood vessel supply that maintains circulation to a transferred tissue flap during reconstruction.

Full Definition

A vascular pedicle consists of the artery and vein (and sometimes nerve) that supply blood flow to a tissue flap used in reconstruction. In pedicled flaps, this vascular connection remains intact and attached to its original location while the tissue is rotated or advanced to the reconstruction site. The pedicle must be carefully preserved during flap elevation and transfer to maintain tissue viability. Pedicle length, diameter, and mobility determine flap positioning and reach. Understanding pedicle anatomy is crucial for successful flap surgery and avoiding complications.

Usage

Usage note: Used specifically for pedicled flaps, not free tissue transfers.

In Context

  • "The vascular pedicle was carefully preserved during latissimus dorsi flap elevation." — operative report
  • "Pedicle kinking caused venous congestion requiring flap repositioning." — complication management
