Adaptive Switch

A specialised input device that replaces standard controls (e.g., keyboard, mouse) for users with limited motor function, enabling access to electronic devices or powered equipment.

Full Definition

An adaptive switch is any transducer or sensor that converts a user's residual voluntary movement—such as a breath puff, eye blink, head turn, or finger press—into an electronic signal to operate a device. In rehab technology contexts, switches are categorised by their activation method (mechanical, pneumatic, proximity, EMG) and mounting configuration. Editors must distinguish between the switch itself and its mounting hardware. Adaptive switches are a core component of augmentative access systems and powered mobility control. Documentation frequently specifies activation force (in grams or Newtons), travel distance, and feedback modality.

Usage note: Do not hyphenate when used as a noun phrase standing alone ('an adaptive switch'); hyphenate only when directly preceding a noun it modifies ('adaptive-switch mounting').
