An environmental control unit (ECU), also called an electronic aids to daily living (EADL) device, allows individuals with high-level spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, or other conditions causing severe motor limitation to control their physical environment using voice commands, switch scanning, sip-and-puff, or other access modalities. ECUs may be dedicated devices or software integrated into smart-home platforms. Editors should note that 'environmental control unit' and 'electronic aids to daily living' are parallel terms: EADL is increasingly preferred in contemporary literature because it emphasises functional outcome rather than device type. When both appear in a document, the editor should seek author guidance on which to standardise, then use consistently throughout.
