Functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling combines surface or implanted electrodes—which stimulate the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles in a coordinated sequence—with a stationary or motorised cycle ergometer. The technique is used primarily in spinal cord injury and stroke rehabilitation to maintain muscle mass, improve cardiovascular fitness, and reduce secondary complications such as osteoporosis.
