Myoelectric Control

A method of controlling a powered prosthesis or assistive device by detecting electrical signals generated by muscle contractions in the residual limb.

Full Definition

Myoelectric control uses electromyographic (EMG) signals captured from the surface of the skin overlying residual muscles to command the movements of a powered prosthetic limb or rehabilitation device. Electrodes embedded in the prosthetic socket detect these signals, which are then processed to drive motors controlling the device. In editorial practice, 'myoelectric' is always written as a single unhyphenated word. Editors should note that 'myoelectric prosthesis' and 'body-powered prosthesis' are contrasting categories; the two must not be conflated in product or clinical copy.
