Neuroprosthetics

A subdiscipline of rehab technology concerned with devices that substitute for or restore lost neural function by interfacing directly with the nervous system.

Full Definition

Neuroprosthetics (also 'neuroprosthesis' in the singular) refers to electronic or electromechanical devices designed to replace, restore, or supplement the function of the nervous system. Examples include cochlear implants, deep brain stimulators, and spinal cord stimulators. In editorial contexts, editors must distinguish neuroprosthetics from general prosthetics: the defining feature is the neural interface, not limb replacement per se. The plural form 'neuroprosthetics' is used as both a mass noun (referring to the field) and a count noun (referring to multiple devices); editors should check that the intended meaning is clear. The adjective is 'neuroprosthetic' (no 's').
