Proportional Drive Control

A powered wheelchair control interface in which the speed and direction of the chair are proportional to the degree of deflection applied to the input device, typically a joystick.

Proportional drive control contrasts with non-proportional (or 'switched') drive, where the chair responds at a fixed speed regardless of input magnitude. The most common proportional control is the centre-mounted hand joystick; other proportional interfaces include head arrays with proportional mapping, chin controls, and some foot controls. In rehab technology documentation, editors encounter 'proportional drive' in powered wheelchair prescriptions, assistive technology assessment reports, and user training guides.
