A framework for designing educational environments and technologies that are accessible and effective for all users, including those with disabilities, without requiring individualised adaptation.

Full Definition

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational and design philosophy that advocates building flexibility and accessibility into products, environments, and curricula from inception, rather than retrofitting accommodations. In rehab technology contexts, UDL principles inform the design of assistive devices, therapeutic software, and training materials so they accommodate a wide range of cognitive, sensory, and motor abilities by default. Editors working on rehab technology educational materials or policy documents must distinguish UDL from individual accommodation plans and understand that UDL is a proactive, population-level approach. Developed by CAST, UDL is based on three core principles: multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement.
