Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a rehabilitation technique that applies electrical current to nerves innervating paralyzed or weak muscles to produce functional movements and contractions. Unlike traditional electrical stimulation used for muscle strengthening or pain management, FES is specifically designed to restore or substitute for lost motor function by coordinating muscle contractions to produce meaningful activities such as walking, reaching, or grasping. FES systems can be used for exercise, orthotic replacement, or therapeutic stimulation. In rehabilitation medicine, FES is commonly used for patients with spinal cord injury, stroke, or other conditions resulting in motor paralysis or significant weakness.
