Functional Mobility

The ability to move around in one's environment to accomplish daily activities and participate in life situations.

Full Definition

Functional mobility refers to an individual's ability to move safely and efficiently within their environment to perform necessary daily activities and participate in valued life roles. This encompasses bed mobility, transfers, wheelchair propulsion, walking, stair navigation, and community mobility. Assessment considers both capacity (what someone can do) and performance (what they actually do in their typical environment). Functional mobility is a primary focus of physical and occupational therapy interventions in rehabilitation settings.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from basic mobility skills by emphasizing functional context.
