Range of Motion

Also written as: ROM — Range of Motion

The extent of joint movement in different directions, measured in degrees and assessed for rehabilitation planning.

Full Definition

Range of Motion (ROM) refers to the degree of movement possible at a joint or series of joints, typically measured in degrees using a goniometer. ROM assessment includes active ROM (patient-initiated movement), passive ROM (therapist-assisted movement), and active-assisted ROM (combination approach). Limited ROM can result from pain, swelling, muscle weakness, or joint stiffness, requiring specific therapeutic interventions to restore functional movement.

Usage

Usage note: Specify active vs. passive ROM; include specific joint and movement direction with degree measurements.

In Context

  • "Shoulder flexion ROM improved from 90 degrees to 135 degrees during the treatment period." — Physical therapy progress note
  • "Passive ROM exercises will maintain joint mobility while active movement recovers." — Treatment plan
