Specialized cells surrounding the oocyte that support its development and indicate oocyte maturity during IVF procedures.

Full Definition

Cumulus cells are specialized granulosa cells that form a protective layer around the oocyte within the ovarian follicle. These cells play crucial roles in oocyte nutrition, maturation, and ovulation. During IVF procedures, the appearance and expansion of cumulus cells serve as important indicators of oocyte maturity and quality. Well-expanded, radiant cumulus cell complexes typically indicate mature, fertilizable oocytes, while compact or degenerated cumulus cells may suggest immature or poor-quality oocytes. The cumulus cells must be removed before ICSI procedures but are often left intact for conventional IVF to support fertilization.
