gestational carrier

Woman who carries a pregnancy for intended parents using an embryo to which she has no genetic connection.

Full Definition

A gestational carrier, also known as a gestational surrogate, is a woman who agrees to carry a pregnancy for intended parents using an embryo created through IVF that contains no genetic material from the carrier herself. This arrangement differs from traditional surrogacy, where the surrogate's own egg is used. Gestational carrier arrangements require extensive legal, psychological, and medical evaluation and coordination. The process involves embryo transfer to the carrier's uterus following appropriate endometrial preparation, with the carrier having no biological relationship to the resulting child.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term over 'surrogate' in formal medical documentation; distinguish from traditional surrogacy.
