In vitro maturation (IVM) is an assisted reproductive technique that involves retrieving immature oocytes from unstimulated or minimally stimulated ovaries and allowing them to complete maturation in laboratory culture conditions. This approach offers an alternative to conventional controlled ovarian hyperstimulation protocols, particularly beneficial for women at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or those with polycystic ovary syndrome. The technique requires specialized culture media and expertise to support oocyte nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation. While IVM can reduce treatment costs and minimize patient discomfort, pregnancy rates are typically lower than with conventional IVF, making patient selection and counseling crucial components of treatment planning.
