TESE

Pronunciation: TEES

Also written as: TESE — Testicular Sperm Extraction

Testicular sperm extraction, a surgical procedure to retrieve sperm directly from testicular tissue in severe male infertility.

Full Definition

TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) is a surgical procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from testicular tissue in men with non-obstructive azoospermia or when other sperm retrieval methods have failed. The procedure involves making a small incision in the testis and extracting a small amount of testicular tissue, which is then processed in the laboratory to identify and isolate sperm for use in ICSI. TESE can be performed as a simple biopsy procedure or as a more extensive microsurgical procedure (micro-TESE) using an operating microscope to identify areas of the testis most likely to contain sperm.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other sperm retrieval methods; specify conventional vs. microsurgical approach when relevant.

In Context

  • "TESE was performed bilaterally to maximize sperm retrieval chances." — Surgical report
  • "The urologist recommended micro-TESE due to the patient's previous failed conventional TESE." — Treatment recommendation
