embryo biopsy

Removal of cells from an embryo for genetic testing before implantation.

Full Definition

Embryo biopsy is the procedure of removing one or more cells from a developing embryo for genetic analysis during in vitro fertilization cycles. The biopsy can be performed at different developmental stages: polar body biopsy (before fertilization), cleavage-stage biopsy (day 3), or blastocyst biopsy (day 5-6). The removed cells are analyzed for genetic abnormalities while the embryo continues development. Modern protocols favor blastocyst biopsy due to improved accuracy and reduced impact on embryo viability.

Usage note: Two words when used as a noun; hyphenate when used as an adjective.
