Multifactorial inheritance, also called complex or polygenic inheritance, describes conditions that result from the interaction of multiple genetic variants along with environmental influences. Unlike single-gene disorders, multifactorial conditions do not follow simple Mendelian inheritance patterns and typically show familial clustering without clear dominant or recessive patterns. Examples include neural tube defects, congenital heart defects, and cleft lip/palate, which are important considerations in reproductive genetics counseling.
