ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Potentially serious complication of fertility treatment characterized by enlarged ovaries and fluid accumulation.

Full Definition

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic complication of controlled ovarian stimulation characterized by increased capillary permeability leading to fluid shift from intravascular to extravascular spaces. Clinical manifestations range from mild abdominal discomfort and bloating to severe ascites, pleural effusion, and thromboembolic events. Risk factors include young age, polycystic ovary syndrome, high AMH levels, and large numbers of follicles during stimulation. Modern protocols aim to minimize OHSS risk through careful monitoring and preventive strategies.
