Villus sampling, more precisely known as chorionic villus sampling (CVS), is an invasive prenatal diagnostic test that involves obtaining a small sample of placental tissue (chorionic villi) for genetic analysis. The procedure can be performed either transcervically (through the cervix) or transabdominally (through the maternal abdomen), depending on placental position. It provides earlier diagnosis than amniocentesis but carries a small risk of miscarriage and potential for maternal cell contamination or confined placental mosaicism.
