gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist

A synthetic hormone that initially stimulates then suppresses natural hormone production in fertility treatments.

Full Definition

A synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring gonadotrophin-releasing hormone that is used in assisted reproductive technology protocols. Initially, GnRH agonists stimulate the release of FSH and LH, but with continued use they cause downregulation and suppression of the pituitary gland. This allows clinicians to control the timing of ovulation and prevent premature luteinizing hormone surges during IVF cycles.
