Implantation Failure

The inability of a transferred embryo to implant in the endometrium despite apparently normal conditions.

Full Definition

Implantation failure refers to the lack of successful embryo implantation following embryo transfer, resulting in a negative pregnancy test. This can occur as a single event or as recurrent implantation failure (RIF), typically defined as failure after transfer of multiple good-quality embryos over several cycles. Potential causes include embryonic factors (chromosomal abnormalities), maternal factors (endometrial receptivity issues, immunological factors), or unexplained factors. Investigation may include genetic testing of embryos, endometrial assessment, and immunological workup.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between single implantation failure and recurrent implantation failure (RIF) in documentation.
