Full Definition
Progesterone and sometimes estrogen supplementation provided after embryo transfer to support the luteal phase and maintain endometrial receptivity for implantation. This support is necessary because IVF treatment protocols often impair natural corpus luteum function. Luteal phase support typically continues until the placenta can produce adequate hormones to maintain pregnancy, usually around 8-12 weeks of gestation.
