Mitochondrial DNA Testing

Full Definition

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing in reproductive medicine involves analyzing the mitochondrial genetic material in oocytes or embryos to assess cellular energy production capacity and overall quality. Mitochondria provide energy for cellular processes crucial to fertilization, embryo development, and implantation. Abnormal mtDNA content or mutations may be associated with poor oocyte quality, failed fertilization, developmental arrest, and implantation failure. This testing is still largely investigational but may help explain unexplained infertility and guide treatment decisions in some cases.
