oligozoospermia

Pronunciation: oh-li-go-zo-oh-SPUR-mee-ah

A condition characterized by a low concentration of sperm in semen, typically below 15 million sperm per milliliter.

Full Definition

Oligozoospermia is a male fertility condition defined by the World Health Organization as having fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of ejaculate, or fewer than 39 million sperm per ejaculate total. This condition can range from mild to severe, with severe oligozoospermia involving concentrations below 5 million/mL. The condition may be caused by various factors including hormonal imbalances, genetic disorders, infections, varicoceles, or lifestyle factors. Diagnosis requires at least two semen analyses performed weeks apart. Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause and may include lifestyle modifications, hormonal therapy, surgical interventions, or assisted reproductive technologies.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from azoospermia (no sperm) and asthenozoospermia (poor sperm motility).
