A potentially serious complication of ovarian stimulation medications used in assisted reproductive technology cycles. OHSS occurs when the ovaries become excessively enlarged and leak fluid into the abdominal cavity, causing bloating, weight gain, and in severe cases, breathing difficulties and blood clots. The condition is triggered by the hCG trigger injection and can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening complications requiring hospitalization. Risk factors include young age, low BMI, polycystic ovaries, and high AMH levels. Prevention strategies include careful monitoring and modified protocols.
