Full Definition
Ovum pickup (OPU), also known as oocyte retrieval, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed under conscious sedation to collect mature eggs from ovarian follicles. Using transvaginal ultrasound guidance, a needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into each follicle to aspirate the follicular fluid containing the oocyte. This procedure typically occurs 34-36 hours after the trigger injection and marks the completion of the ovarian stimulation phase of IVF treatment.
Usage
Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as OPU in clinical settings. 'Egg retrieval' is more patient-friendly terminology.
