chest physiotherapy

Also written as: CPT

Mechanical techniques used to mobilize secretions and improve lung function through percussion, vibration, and postural drainage.

Full Definition

Chest physiotherapy encompasses various manual and mechanical techniques designed to enhance secretion clearance and improve respiratory function. Traditional CPT includes postural drainage, percussion, and vibration, while modern approaches incorporate high-frequency chest wall oscillation devices, positive expiratory pressure therapy, and airway clearance techniques. These interventions are particularly beneficial for patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, or those with retained secretions. Respiratory therapists must be skilled in selecting appropriate techniques based on patient condition and tolerance.

Usage

Usage note: Abbreviated as CPT; distinguish from 'chest PT' which may be confused with physical therapy.
