Dry Powder Inhaler, a breath-activated device that delivers medication as a fine powder without propellants or external power source.

Full Definition

A Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) is a medication delivery system that contains drug formulations in powder form, activated by the patient's inspiratory effort. Unlike MDIs, DPIs do not require propellants or coordination between actuation and inhalation, as the device is automatically triggered by sufficient inspiratory flow. DPIs require adequate peak inspiratory flow rates (typically >30 L/min) to effectively disperse the powder and achieve optimal lung deposition. Common DPI designs include single-dose capsule systems, multi-dose reservoir devices, and blister pack formats. DPIs are environmentally friendly alternatives to propellant-based inhalers.
