End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) is the measurement of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaled breath at the end of expiration, when CO2 levels are highest and most closely reflect alveolar CO2 levels. ETCO2 monitoring, also called capnometry or capnography when displayed as a waveform, provides continuous, non-invasive assessment of ventilation adequacy, circulation status, and airway patency. Normal ETCO2 values range from 35-45 mmHg and typically correlate well with arterial PCO2 in healthy patients. Respiratory therapists use ETCO2 monitoring for ventilator weaning, confirming proper intubation, and detecting changes in patient status.
