A heated humidifier is an essential respiratory care device that adds both heat and moisture to dry medical gases before they reach the patient's respiratory system. The device consists of a heated water chamber that creates water vapor, which is then mixed with the gas flow to achieve optimal temperature and humidity levels. Proper humidification is crucial for patients with artificial airways because it prevents drying of respiratory secretions, maintains mucociliary clearance, and reduces the risk of airway inflammation. The system typically maintains gas temperature at 37°C and 100% relative humidity at the airway opening. Different types include pass-over, cascade, and wick humidifiers, each with specific applications and performance characteristics.
